The lake effect winds off of Keuka Lake, one of the most scenic of Finger Lakes, create the perfect growing climate for grapes. The McGregor Vineyard and Winery is one of the local wineries that has taken advantage of this perfect grape-growing weather and soil to create a marvelous selection of hand-crafted and award-winning wines.
The Vineyard
While the Finger Lakes region of New York has always been an amazing place to grow the grapes native to this area, many believed that the land and climate were not suited to anything but those indigenous Native American grape varieties. In 1971, the McGregor family planted 28 acres of Vinifera, the variety of grapes used to create Old World European wines. Because of their meticulous care and their commitment to excellence in vineyard management, the McGregors’ plantings have thrived and now produce some of the most unique and delicious wines in the region.
The Wines
In addition to the wide array of traditional wines grown in most Finger Lakes wineries, the McGregor Vineyard and Winery produces wines which are rare to the region and even to the country. Come for a visit and you will be able to sample several Vinifera grape wines such as the Saperavi Rkatsiteli, the Sereksiya Charni and the Sereksiya Rose’. These unique wines are all hand-crafted: grown, produced, bottled and sold at McGregor’s.
The Experience
The beautiful and rustic McGregor Vineyard and Winery is located on the east branch of Keuka Lake near the village of Hammondsport, and it is an ideal place to enjoy both the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes area and a productive winery. After taking a stroll through the vineyards, visit the enclosed tasting deck and sample a selection of their excellent and delicious wines. Each wine tasting is accompanied by seasonal snacks or a fruit or cheese plate, and the experienced and friendly staff will happily assist you as you make your selections. Before you leave, relax and enjoy the glorious panoramic views of the lake from the picnic area.
The Events
Each year the McGregor Vineyard hosts a variety of events to celebrate the release of its new wines. Every wine is perfectly paired with creative treats to enhance your wine-tasting experience, and seasonal events are wonderful opportunities to visit the vineyard. One of the most unique events hosted by the McGregors is a formal, candle-lit white wine barrel tasting, complete with crystal glasses and an extraordinary buffet. The winery participates in the Keuka Lake Wine Trail, is open every day of the year and can accommodate groups as well as individuals.
